Why does rest feel so hard to choose?
Because almost every message around us says do more. New season, new goals. Get outside, get ready for the beach, make plans, reinvent yourself. Even rest gets turned into a project to optimise.
Before you rush into the next thing, there's another question worth asking: what can you replenish first?
Doesn't practice mean pushing harder?
Sometimes practice is strong and fiery. That's great on the days you have the fuel for it. But yoga is also, always, about gathering yourself back in. Resting. Breathing. Moving slowly. Paying attention. Doing small things with care.
It's never about asking more of yourself than you have the capacity to give. On a depleted week, the most skilful practice might be the quietest one on the timetable.
Which classes help when I'm depleted?
Think about our energy scale as a way to match the class to the tank, not the other way round.
- Yin Yoga for long, fully supported holds where the only job is to soften.
- Stretch Yoga to undo the tight hips, shoulders and back that a big week leaves behind.
- Meditation at our Helensvale studio, weekly, when even gentle movement feels like too much.
- Slow Flow Yoga when you want to move but without the rush.
These still count as showing up. Often they're the classes that make the strong ones possible later in the week. If it's stress more than tiredness, there's more on how breath and stillness settle the nervous system in yoga for stress relief.
What can I do between classes?
Small things, done with care. They won't make your inbox disappear or create another three hours in the day. That isn't the point. They're small ways of putting some life back into your life.
- A cup of tea drunk without your phone.
- Five quiet breaths before getting out of the car.
- Rolling out your mat when you only have ten minutes.
- Lighting a candle before you sit quietly.
- Going outside to feel the sun on your face.
We've written more about this in why small daily rituals change more than big goals and the breath side of it in the way you breathe changes how you feel.
So where do I start?
You're not a machine designed to efficiently complete an endless series of tasks. You're a human being. Human beings need rest, beauty, meaning and connection. We need moments that aren't productive at all.
So if you're feeling depleted, don't immediately turn yourself into a project. Tend to yourself gently first. Book one quiet class on the timetable this week and let that be enough.
