What does "dynamic" actually mean?
It means you'll move through flowing sequences. You'll build strength and stamina. You'll meet some moments of challenge. And at some point your body will probably ask, "are we really holding this pose for this long?" The answer will be yes.
But there will be options. And pauses. And different ways to approach the poses that feel spicy. You are always allowed to take the version of a pose that works for you that day.
What does it not mean?
You don't need to be super flexible. You don't need to be able to handstand. Nobody will make you do 47 chaturangas while the teacher yells motivational slogans at you. The class plays with arm balances, inversions and bigger poses, but those are invitations, not entry requirements. It's always a yoga class, never a boot camp.
Not everyone in the room will know what they're doing. You won't have to keep up with every option the teacher offers.
I used to do Flow. Is this the same class?
If you enjoyed our Flow classes before the name changed, we're especially talking to you. It's the same kind of strong, flowing practice under a clearer name. We promise you didn't become less capable when the class name changed.
When Flow became Dynamic, we also added Slow Flow as a brand new class. If you drifted there because the name sounded familiar, Dynamic is the one you used to love.
How is it different from Slow Flow?
Both link breath with movement. Slow Flow Yoga moves at a steady, unhurried pace and builds a gentle internal heat. Dynamic Yoga turns the pace and the load up: more heat, more strength work and longer holds. On our energy scale Slow Flow sits in the middle and Dynamic sits at the top, alongside Power Pilates.
Neither is the "better" class. Slow Flow is a practice in its own right, not a waiting room for Dynamic. But if you've been sticking to it only because you're worried you're not good enough for Dynamic, we'd put it to you that you might be underestimating yourself.
What's the worst that could happen?
You take a few more rests than usual. That's it. Child's pose is always available and nobody is counting.
The best case? You realise you've been avoiding a class you actually really enjoy.
How do I try it?
Pick a Dynamic class on the timetable, set your mat up somewhere you feel comfortable and let your teacher know it's your first one. Take the options when you need them and skip the ones you don't. If you like the strength side, Power Pilates builds the same kind of strength a different way. A Yin class later in the week is the recovery that makes it sustainable. There's more on why that mix works in why your body loves variety.
