Is the burn my muscles being damaged?
No. Despite how dramatic it can feel, that sensation is a normal response to muscular effort rather than a sign that something is going wrong.
So what actually causes it?
When you hold a position, pulse or move slowly under tension (which is basically barre and Pilates in a nutshell), your muscles are working continuously. This creates a high demand for energy, temporary fatigue in the muscle and a buildup of metabolic byproducts. One of those byproducts is what contributes to the burning sensation you feel.
In simple terms: your muscles are working hard, energy is being used rapidly and the local environment in the muscle changes. And your nervous system says: hey, this is getting spicy, my endurance is being tested.
Why is it so strong in barre and Pilates?
Because these styles often use small range movements, isometric holds, slow controlled tempo and high repetitions. All of that increases time under tension, and more time working means more fatigue signals.
What about the shakes?
Also normal. Shaking usually means the muscle is approaching fatigue, your nervous system is recruiting fibres rapidly and adaptation is happening in real time. It's not a sign of weakness or failure. Just effort.
Is the burn a measure of success?
Not really. Think of it as feedback rather than a score. It tells you your muscles are being challenged, your endurance is being tested and strength is being built. A class without much burn can still be doing plenty of good work.
How to work with it instead of fighting it
- Breathe. Holding your breath only amplifies tension and fatigue. Your muscles need the oxygen carried by your inhale to fuel their cells, and they need the exhale to carry metabolic waste away.
- Soften what you don't need. Jaw, shoulders and hands often grip unnecessarily. Let them go. Don't make things harder than you need to.
- Distinguish discomfort from pain. Strong effort, yes. Sharp pain, no.
- Keep your form. The quality of your technique will take you much further than brute force ever will, and it's safer too.
