Studio etiquette: how we share the practice room

We love that Flolo is friendly and social. We also want our practice rooms to feel like sanctuaries: places where the noise of the day can disappear for a while. Keeping both takes a few small things from everyone.

When should I arrive?

About ten minutes before class, especially for your first one. That gives us time to show you around and gives you time to settle in and ease into the space, rather than rushing in with your heart still racing from the drive.

We lock the doors when class starts so everyone's belongings stay safe, which means a late arrival can miss out. Until you know your studio, allow an extra five minutes for parking. All three are in busy spots, but there's plenty of parking around each one.

Can I bring my phone into class?

Our practice rooms are phone-free zones, so please leave yours outside the room. An hour without notifications is part of what you came for. A buzzing phone pulls everyone around you out of it too.

Can I chat before and after class?

Please do. A lot of the best friendships at Flolo start in the few minutes before class. Just keep the volume at a level that respects the people around you, since some of them will be using those minutes to settle in quietly.

Do I need to clean my mat?

Yes. Give your mat a spray and wipe after class. It takes thirty seconds and it means the next person rolls out onto something fresh.

What do I do with the props?

Mats, blocks, blankets, bands and weights are all provided in every studio and you're more than welcome to use them. If you have your own mat or props, feel free to bring them instead. When you're done with ours, return them neatly to where you found them. The next person to walk in should feel the space has been tended to with care, because it has.

Why do these small things matter?

None of this is about rules for their own sake. A practice room only feels like a sanctuary when everyone in it looks after it together. The quiet, the tidy shelves and the fresh mat are small gifts from the people who were there before you. You're passing the same thing on to whoever comes next.

That care is a big part of what turns a studio into a community. We've written more about that in how a studio becomes somewhere you belong.

Anything else before my first class?

Bring a water bottle and comfortable clothes; everything else is there for you. Let us know it's your first class when you arrive and we'll show you around. If you have an injury or anything your teacher should know about, have a quick word before class starts so they can offer options. If you're feeling a bit wobbly about the whole thing, read feeling nervous about your first class?, then pick a time on the timetable.

Ready to try a class?

Start anywhere, at all three studios.
